Expressing wishes and hopes

We use wish that+ constructions with would, could, was, were or past tenses to express wishes for unlikely or impossible situations and to express regret.

- A- unlikely situations

- I wish The Arab nations will unite to find a solution to their problems.

- I wish I were a president.

B- Impossible situations

- I wish I had wings to fly high and cruise round the world.

C- Regret ( or feeling sorry for a past action )

- I wish I didn’t fight with my teacher.

D- wish + unreal past ( to express regret about a present situation.)

- I wish I could drive a car.

- I wish I lived in Agadir.

E- to express a wish for the future

- “ I wish my son would write me letters every day” says a mother whose son lives inLondon

E- wish is used to express dissatisfaction for a present situation and a hope for a change in the future.

Eg : I wish they would change the family code one of these days.

- I wish they would stop making bombs.

F- wish is used when a person does not control what he hopes for.

Eg – I wish it would stop raining

-       I wish the train would come soon.

j- for wishes about things that are positive and seem likely in the future,we use hope +that clause with simple present or future will forms

eg – I hope that will spend a nice journey in friwatou

-          I hope that the world does not lose sight of hungry children inAfrica.

Construction of the Passive Voice

The structure of the passive voice is very simple:

subject + auxiliary verb (be) + main verb (past participle)

The main verb is always in its past participle form.

Simple present

1- We             keep                 the butter               in the fridge in summer.

Subject          verb                Direct object

- The butter      is                    kept                         in the fridge in summer

Subject         auxiliary        verb (pp)

2- The engineers are repairing theLondon bridge.       ( present continuous )

The Londonbridge is being repaired by the engineers.

3- The Prime Minister has just delivered a speech in the parliament   ( Present perfect )

A speech has just been delivered by the prime minister in the parliament.

4- The Marines assassinated Ben Laden last year.  ( Simple Past )

Ben Laden was assassinated last year by the Marines

5- We should preserve the African Elephant because it ‘s going to extinct. ( Modal)

The African elephant should be preserved because it’s going to extinct.

The Impersonal Passive

1- People say that Houssni Moubarak is in a coma these days.

It is said that Houssni Moubarak is in a coma these days.

Example 2

-  People think that the Arab spring is going to be a dead loss

    It is thought that the Arab spring is going to be a dead loss.

( The impersonal passive is used with verbs like assume, believe, consider, know, suppose,

Understand, estimate, feel ……..)

Being + verbs ( used after verbs in the Gerund form )

1-      You should go home before dark to avoid being mugged.

2-      Peter hates being given orders

3-      I remember being punished by my teacher in the primary school.

4-      Ilham doesn’t like being cheated.

The passive voice is formed as follows
Auxilary ‘be’ in the same tense as the verb of the active+past participle of the verb.

1- Simple present
The helicopter brings food to the refugees every week.

2- Simple Past
They launched an anti-smoking campaign in the media recently.
………………………………………………………………………………………………….

3- Present Perfect
American people have elected obama new president of America.
………………………………………………………………………………………………….

4- Present continous
Rich countries are not doing anything to eradicate poverty.

5- With modals ( can,should,will,would …..)
you must rewrite this report.It’s full of mistakes.

* some people consider that high speed is the main cause of accidents.

* peole say that the United Nations should be dismantled.

* Note that sometimes it’s impossible to change to the passive form when there is an indirect object.
Example : I am setting off to Rabat next week.

2-    The United Nations will /should send more UNIFEL forces to the Israeli borders.

3-    The Alarabita channel covers with professionalism the war onGaza.

4-    The Iraqi court is considering the case of the Journalist who threw shoes at G.w Bush.

5-    Assala Nassri has cancelled a concert inLebanonto show her compassion for theGazapopulation.

6-    The Resolutions of the United Nations are going to be presented to the two conflicting sides Hamass andIsrael.

7-    People believe that my cousin  is a coward and betrayer.

Will or going to ?

Will or going to ? 

When we want to talk about future facts or things we believe to be true about the future, we use ‘will’.

  • I’m sure you’ll like her.
  • I’m certain The new president will  do a good job.

   If we are not so certain about the future, we use ‘will’ with expressions such as ‘probably’, ‘possibly’, ‘I think’, ‘I hope’.

  • I’ll possibly come but I may not get back in time.
  • I think we’ll sign the contract tomorrow.

   At the moment of making a decision, use ‘will’. Once you have made the decision, talk about it using ‘going to’.

  • I’ll call Jenny to let her know. Sarah, I need Jenny’s number. I’m going to call her about the meeting.

    Use “ will “ for Promises

1-   If I am elected president of theUnited States, I’ll make sure you will have access to inexpensive health insurance.

   Use “ will “ when you offer to do something for someone.

A /  I am very hungry.

B : Ok, I “ll make some sandwiches right now.

 II – Going to

.   If you are making a future prediction based on evidence in the present situation, use ‘going to’.

1- Not a cloud in the sky. It’s going to be another warm day.

2- Look at the queue. We’re not going to get in for hours.

3- Be careful! You’re going to spill your coffee.

   Use “ going to”  when you have a plan.

1-   We are going to meet at 6:00 at the railway station.

2-   I am going to invite my colleagues for diner tonight.
